The Northern elephant seal pictured has a CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) tag attached to it by a team of University of California, Santa Cruz researchers. This FY 05 NOPP project was led by Dr. Dan Costa of the University of California, Santa Cruz to understand apex predator and pelagic fish movements in the California Current System (CCS). The data from the tagged animals indicated the CCS is one of the most significant hotspots within the entire northeast Pacific Ocean. Read more

BOEMRE, DOE, NOAA today announced eight joint research awards totaling nearly $5 million to support the responsible siting and permitting of offshore wind energy facilities and ocean energy generated from waves, tides, currents and thermal gradients. Read more
For funding beginning in FY 2011, the National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP), the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) welcome research proposals on Marine Mammal Detection and Monitoring. The partner agencies are particularly interested in new technologies and systems to detect, identify, locate and track marine mammals within a specified area with a high level of confidence.
